As an Indie Author, our two most precious resources are Time and Money – chances are, you don’t have a lot of either. But, when it comes to marketing, it seems like you need a combination of both in order to be successful. The ‘easy’ promotions cost a lot of money – and the free ones (at least, the free ones that work) take a lot of time.
So, what’s the answer?
Well, for me, it’s a combination of the two. I do some promotions that cost time, some that cost money, and some that cost a little bit of both.
Some examples of high-cost, low-time promotions:
• Book Promotion sites (Bookbub, etc)
• Paid editorial reviews (Kirkus, etc)
• Instafreebie and other newsletter growing opportunities
• Netgalley, and other review subscriptions
• Giveaways (particularly of print copies)
• Ads (Amazon, Facebook, Goodreads, etc)
• Book Trailers
Some examples of high-time, low-cost promotions:
• Social Media (Networking)
• Blog Tours/Blog swaps (can also be paid)
• Maintaining your own blog
• Group promotions
• Submittinh to book bloggers
• Multi-Author anthologies
Examples that cost both:
• Book launches
• Swag (bookmarks, etc)
These are just examples, but you can see my point. If you don’t have time, you better have money, and if you don’t have money, you better make the time.
It might be a hard truth, but marketing – successful marketing – will always cost you one or the other. There are no easy fixes.
I try to balance my marketing between things that cost me time, and things that cost money. I’m not saying that every author needs to do everything on this list, but it is helpful to see what the options are to help make decisions about how we will spend our precious resources of time and money.
It sucks because we also need to balance the marketing with our writing time, which is often in short supply as it is. One thing I have learned is to accept that marketing will take away from my writing time. It’s a hard pill to swallow, but it’s a necessary evil if I want to be successful.
I hope this helps someone make decisions about marketing in the future.
