Come closer, I’m going to tell you a secret; I lost my laptop to a tragic Pepsi Incident a few months ago and discovered I could survive just fine with only my iPad. I feared I wouldn’t be able to design my covers and/or promotional banners on just my tablet and without Photshop but guess what? Those fears turned out to be completely unfounded. If you have a tablet as well, then you too can make some pretty cool banners and without having to spend much money.
Don’t believe me? During one of my writer’s blocks months, I decided to make free Facebook banners for other indie authors to get my creative juices flowing again. Some turned out be pretty cool. I deleted most of them but I managed to find a couple still saved in my library.
Check them out below (in low quality).
Pretty much all of them have some manipulations, but Justin’s and the Egyptian one was a combination of about five to seven different pictures blended together.
All were made with free apps. So without further ado, here are some apps I’d recommend to anyone trying to work on their designing skills.
Typorama is super easy to use even if you have zero design skills. It saves you tons of work by automatically creating complex text design layouts. And it’s advanced crop options lets you create the perfect size pictures for social media posts. It also has a 3D text distortion, partial eraser, text shadows and color gradient tools. The free version has an annoying stamp but works exactly like the full version. I like it a lot and use it quite frequently.
Next on my list is Wordswag. Unfortunaly, this apps costs about $5 but trust me, it’s money well spent. Wordswag makes it possible for you to create beautifully custom text layouts that would normally take minutes – or even hours – with just a tap.
Third on my list is Aviary. Aviary allows you to fine-tune your photos with a full range of sophisticated filters and even has one-touch tools for adjusting lighting, focus and color. Aviary is my favorite app to use to manipulate the color scheme of my pictures. Aviary is available for free.
2. GIF MAKER AND GENERATOR
I discovered Gif Maker a couple of days ago and pretty much fell in love. It’s free and easy to use. The thing I love about it most is the fact that you can set the duration (in milliseconds) that each frame will be displayed. How cool is that?
1. PICS ART
My favorite app to design banners with is Pics Art. I use this app for practically everything. I use it to make banners and to make covers, I use it to play around with images I plan to use on my website and more. And I’m not alone. With more than 300 million installs, PicsArt is the #1 all-in-one photo editor, collage maker and drawing tool. The biggest thing that stands out about this app to me is the sheer number of editing options at your fingertips. It allows you to change colors of your pictures, add cool effects, and it makes it possible for you to correct and blend multiple images. In addition to that it allows you to easily add text, stickers, and draw on images. And it’s completely free; I love it.
That’s it! Those are my favorite apps to design with. Check them out. And remember: practice makes perfect. 🙂
