Jo Tilley (1972 – )was born in London, UK but grew up mainly in Nottingham. She currently lives in Newark, UK with her husband and two teenage children.
Writing has been an interest since childhood. Song writing was something she particularly focused on as a teenager and young adult; the discipline of getting a concept across creatively and succinctly was a great training ground for fiction writing.
Writing Worldkeeper initially started as a personal project. “I was just interested to see if I had it in me to commit to telling a story of that length,” she says. The idea for the story came a number of years ago. “At the time, I wrote my thoughts down in my song writing journal, intending to work it into a song. I quickly realised the concept was too big for that.” The idea lay dormant, therefore, until Jo attended university to train as an English teacher. Creative writing featured as part of the course, and the encouragement of her tutor kickstarted the creation of Worldkeeper. “I think I just needed someone to help me believe that writing was something I was good at,” she says.
Jo now combines writing with raising a family and working part time as a high school chaplain. Her Christian faith is a big part of her life. However it’s not an overt theme in Worldkeeper. “The clues are there if you know what you’re looking for,” she says. “But I’m more interested in exploring how people respond to challenging situations, depending on their experiences and perspectives of life. We all have a belief system, a set of values on which we base our lives. Where that comes from, and how it impacts our actions for the good or otherwise of those around us, is what drives my writing.” She is currently working on a sequel to Worldkeeper.
